Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Romanesque-origin church in Velhartice, Czech Republic.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a two-nave Romanesque-origin building from around 1240 with two asymmetrically placed towers. The older west tower has four storeys and a dome, while the massive north tower with a pyramidal roof stands between the nave and the presbytery. The presbytery has Gothic windows, and the nave windows are rounded from the 18th-century Baroque remodelling. The tower corners are decorated with grey-blue painted bossage on an ochre ground.

The church originated around 1240 as a Romanesque building; its west tower and parts of the original nave survive. In the first half of the 14th century it was rebuilt in Gothic style, with a new rib-vaulted presbytery, a lengthened nave and the north tower. A Renaissance reconstruction followed in the early 16th century, adding a second nave, a diamond-vaulted sacristy and a monumental tabernacle dated 1517. Baroque alterations in the 18th century gave the church its present form.

The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and serves the Roman Catholic parish of Velhartice. Its main altar, made in 1875, replaced a Baroque altar of 1772; the statues of Saints Peter and Paul were carried over from the older altar. In the centre stands a gilded Madonna on a crescent moon holding the blessing Christ Child.

The church sits at the edge of Velhartice village near the medieval castle, making it easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that regular services take place and interior viewing may be limited outside of scheduled times.

The church has been a protected cultural monument since 1964. Its façades retain painted bossage in grey-blue on an ochre ground, a detail easily missed at street level. A 16th-century tombstone with a coat of arms is set into the north wall.
