Naděje Reservoir, lake in Czech Republic
Naděje Reservoir is a small stone dam in a forested valley of the Lusatian Mountains near Cvikov. The dam measures about 92 meters long and 9.5 meters high, holding a calm water surface surrounded by conifers and forest trails.
The reservoir was built between 1937 and 1938 to supply water to a nearby mill and power a small turbine for electricity. After World War II, it stopped serving these industrial purposes and now mainly helps prevent flooding.
The forest trails around the reservoir follow paths that once connected communities in this mountain valley. Locals and visitors alike use these routes to move through a landscape shaped by generations of people who worked the land and water here.
Access is by a marked forest trail that is closed to vehicles, with parking available about 900 meters away. Walking along the designated path takes you through the woods to reach the dam and water's edge.
The dam was built just before World War II during a politically tense time, using stone cut from a quarry only a few kilometers away. It stands as a rare example of how local communities completed major projects despite the uncertainties of that era.
