Petřín funicular, Funicular railway in Hradčany, Czech Republic
The Petřín funicular connects the Újezd district at the bottom with the summit of Petřín Hill at the top across a track of about 510 meters. It stops at Nebozízek station halfway along the route, providing a middle access point to the slopes and pathways of the hill.
The line began operation in 1891 using water power and switched to electric operation in 1932. It stopped running in 1965 due to landslides but is now undergoing modernization.
The name comes from Petřín Hill, where people have walked and enjoyed views for generations. The middle station at Nebozízek serves as a gathering point between the city below and the gardens above, marking a natural pause in the route.
The system is currently closed for renovation, with buses 143 and 149 offering alternative routes up the hill. Once reopened, it provides a comfortable and gradual way to reach the summit without climbing many stairs.
The electric machinery installed in 1932 operated for decades without modifications or major repairs. This robustness shows how well early engineering was designed for this type of mountain transport.
