Březová Reservoir, reservoir
Březová Reservoir is a water impoundment on the Teplá River near Karlovy Vary, stretching for about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). The concrete dam measures roughly 230 meters (755 feet) long and stands about 25 meters (82 feet) tall, functioning for flood control and power generation through a small hydroelectric plant.
The reservoir was planned after the devastating flood of 1890 and constructed between 1931 and 1935, beginning operation in 1937. Designed by Professor Arthur Payr, a small hydroelectric plant was added below the dam from the mid-1980s onward to generate electricity for the local area.
The dam can be crossed via the main road that connects Karlovy Vary to other towns, providing good access to the area. Walking along the dam offers views of the water, and during lower water levels, submerged structures become visible at the bottom.
An old bridge from the original road lies submerged beneath the water surface, dating from before the area was flooded. This underwater structure becomes visible when water levels drop, serving as a reminder of the landscape that existed before the reservoir was created.
