Nový Hrádek, Castle ruin in Lukov, Czech Republic
Nový Hrádek is a castle ruin located in Lukov in southern Moravia, comprising an upper fortress and lower castle structures positioned on a cliff above the Thaya River valley. The buildings span multiple levels and display characteristic features of medieval fortification design.
The castle began in the 13th century and underwent several reconstructions and expansions over subsequent centuries. Today the ruins reveal traces of this long development and gradual decline.
This national monument preserves medieval architectural elements while providing habitat for numerous plant species including rock stonecrop and white wall pepper.
The site sits on a cliff with steep slopes and requires steady footing while exploring. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable, and allow time to move between the different levels.
The site integrates naturally with Podyjí National Park, Moravia's only national park, spanning 63 square kilometers along the Czech-Austrian border.
