Zahrádky Castle, Empire style château in Zahrádky, Czech Republic.
Zahrádky Castle is an Empire style château in the small village of Zahrádky in the Czech Republic. Its facade follows a strict symmetry with classical framing elements that are typical of noble residences from the early 19th century.
The castle dates back to the 16th century and went through several building phases over the following centuries. Its current Empire style exterior came together in the early 19th century during a major renovation that reshaped the whole building.
The village name Zahrádky means simply "gardens" in Czech, and the grounds around the castle once lived up to that name with formal planted areas. Today, walking past the building, visitors can still read the symmetry of its facade as a sign of how seriously local aristocracy took their public image.
The castle is not open to visitors at the moment and is in need of restoration work. The exterior can be seen from the road nearby, but the grounds are private, so it is best to keep a respectful distance.
A fire in 2003 left the building in a fragile state and later drew the attention of a university team studying ways to approach the preservation of damaged historical structures. There are plans to convert the castle into a conference center, which would give it a very different kind of second life.
