Máj Národní, Department store in New Town, Prague, Czech Republic
Máj Národní is a department store on Národní Street in Prague's New Town with a prominent glass and steel facade across multiple floors. The structure blends functionalist design principles with heavy concrete elements visible throughout its form.
The building opened in 1975, replacing a former neo-gothic structure that previously occupied the site. Its design reflected the commercial building practices of that era under its three architects.
The building stands as a symbol of 1970s Prague commerce, marking a shift toward modern retail spaces in the city center. People pass through and shop here as part of their daily rhythm on this busy street.
The store sits at the corner of Spálená and Národní streets with good public transit access nearby. Shopping areas span multiple levels throughout the building and are easy to navigate.
Two large butterfly sculptures were added to the facade in 2024, giving the building a new visual feature. A rooftop observation terrace now offers views across central Prague's rooftops and streets.
