Svatý kopeček, Nature reserve in Mikulov, Czech Republic.

Svatý kopeček is a nature reserve near Mikulov featuring limestone cliffs that form an oval ridge with a flat top and steep slopes rising to 363 meters. Multiple hiking trails crisscross the hill, offering access to different sections where visitors can observe the native plants and animals.

The site received protection status in 1946 due to numerous rare plant species and was formally designated as a nature reserve in 1992. This official recognition ensured long-term preservation of its distinctive ecosystems and biological diversity.

The Pilgrimage Chapel of Saint Sebastian sits at the summit, where visitors following the Way of the Cross path experience the site as a sacred destination that draws those seeking a spiritual journey.

The trails are accessible and suited to different fitness levels, allowing for both short walks and longer hikes. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water, especially on warmer days.

The southern slopes host a rocky steppe environment where dwarf iris, feather grass, and mountain germander grow together in an unusual combination. This alpine flora is rare for the region and draws botanists and nature enthusiasts interested in these hardy plants.

Tourism in South Moravia: Baroque castles, limestone caves, historic monuments

South Moravia combines historic sites, natural formations, and cultural monuments that reflect centuries of history. This region of the Czech Republic is home to castles such as Vranov nad Dyjí, perched 76 meters above the Dyje River, and the aristocratic estate of Lednice with its 19th-century gardens. The Turold limestone caves near Mikulov extend 50 meters underground, while the Svatý Kopeček hill offers a vista from its 363-meter altitude. Visitors can explore ancient religious buildings such as the Sainte-Catherine Rotunda of Znojmo, dating from the 11th century with its dynastic frescoes, or the Archiepiscopal Palace Complex of Kroměříž which houses collections of paintings and geometric gardens. The region also features specialized museums like the firefighters museum in Přibyslav, the Hodonín Zoo covering 7.5 hectares, and the wine cellars of Archlebov carved into the hill. The Slavkov u Brna battlefield commemorates the events of 1805 with memorials and a military museum.
