Mikulov, Border municipality in South Moravian Region, Czech Republic
Mikulov sits at the base of the Palava Hills, with a Renaissance castle rising above it on a limestone cliff. Below the castle, rows of old wine cellars carved into the hillside form the backbone of the town's historic character.
The town received market rights in 1279 and grew under the Liechtenstein family's influence over the following centuries. Later, it became an important residence of the Dietrichstein family until 1945.
The town became a major center for Jewish communities who shaped its character over centuries with their traditions and daily life. Walking through the old streets, you can feel how different groups lived side by side and influenced the character of this place.
The town sits on route I/52, which forms part of European route E461, making it easy to reach by car or train from nearby areas. Regular train services connect it to surrounding municipalities and regions.
The castle holds a massive wine barrel from 1643 that ranks among the largest in Central Europe and tells the story of winemaking tradition here. Few visitors realize this barrel exists or understand how important the wine trade was to the town's economy.
