Regional Museum Mikulov

The Regional Museum Mikulov is located in Mikulov Castle and displays exhibitions from Gothic to Empire periods, showing objects from the former residences of the Liechtenstein and Dietrichstein families. The rooms spread across multiple areas, including the Ancestors' Hall and the Dietrichstein Gallery.

The castle was transferred to the Liechtenstein family in 1249 by King Přemysl Otakar II and served as their residence in the region for centuries. After extensive renovations, it was transformed into a museum in 1950.

The museum's library holds around 11,000 volumes from the former Piarist school, reflecting centuries of regional education traditions. This collection shows how important knowledge and learning have been to the area.

Visitors can explore the rooms on their own or join guided tours, with special tours available for children. It is best to allow enough time to walk through the various exhibition areas at a relaxed pace.

In the castle cellar stands a massive wine barrel from 1643 that holds over 1,000 hectoliters and was once used to collect wine taxes. This unusual object is a rare surviving remnant from when wine was a major local resource.
