Mikulov Castle

Mikulov Castle is a baroque structure perched on a limestone cliff in the town of Mikulov. The building features a central tower, sprawling gardens, and several historical structures that form a substantial complex.

The castle was founded in the 13th century by the Liechtenstein family and has dominated the town ever since. Following major fires in 1719 and 1945, it underwent substantial reconstruction.

The name reflects the Dietrichstein family's centuries-long connection to the place, which shaped its character and collections. Inside, you can see how the nobility lived and what artworks they valued across different periods.

The best time to visit is from April through September, when the castle museum is open daily except Mondays. Guided tours in several languages help you understand the rooms and collections.

Deep in the castle's cellars sits a massive wooden wine barrel from 1643 that can hold over 1,000 hectoliters. This barrel stands as one of the largest preserved wine vessels from that era, showing just how important wine production was to those who owned the castle.
