Jirkov Reservoir, reservoir in Jirkov, Czech Republic
Jirkov Reservoir is a small body of water in the town of Jirkov, held back by a dam approximately 50 feet (48 meters) tall that creates a water surface of roughly 1.4 million square feet (132,000 square meters). The Bilina River feeds and drains the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to towns and industries across North Bohemia while also powering a modest hydroelectric plant at the dam.
The reservoir was built in the early 1960s to supply drinking water to the region and manage water flow downstream. For more than 60 years, it has worked alongside other dams across North Bohemia to ensure towns and industries have steady access to clean water.
The reservoir has long served as a local spot where residents come to unwind after work or spend time outdoors with family. The walking and cycling paths around it are part of the daily rhythm of the community, connecting people to the water and surrounding landscape.
Paths for walking and cycling encircle the area and are open during most seasons, with the pleasantest conditions in warmer months. The water itself is protected and not accessible for swimming or boating, but the surrounding trails offer good views and easy access for those on foot or by bike.
A floating barrier installed in late 2018 captures driftwood, leaves, and other debris flowing into the water to protect the dam's operation and keep the water clean. This specialized system automatically adjusts to changing water levels and requires minimal maintenance while staying largely invisible to visitors.
