Prague 2, Administrative district in Prague, Czech Republic.
Prague 2 is a municipal district in Prague, Czech Republic, made up of four neighborhoods: Vinohrady, Vyšehrad, Nové Město, and Nusle. It sits to the south and east of the city center, covering a mix of residential streets, public parks, and historic architecture.
The current administrative structure of the district was set up in 1990, when Prague reorganized its internal divisions. Some of the neighborhoods it groups together, such as Nové Město, go back to the 14th century, while others like Vinohrady developed rapidly during the 19th century as the city expanded beyond its old walls.
Vinohrady, the most recognized part of the district, is known for its tree-lined streets with late 19th-century apartment buildings that now house cafés, small shops, and restaurants at street level. This mix of residential and social life gives the area a pace that feels more like a neighborhood than a tourist destination.
The district is easy to reach and move around using trams and the metro, which connect all four neighborhoods to each other and to the city center. Walking between areas is also a good option, since the streets are generally flat and most points of interest are within a reasonable distance of each other.
The name Vinohrady means 'vineyards' in Czech, a reminder that the area was once covered with vines cultivated for the royal court. Today there is no trace of that agricultural past in the streetscape, which makes the name feel like a small hidden story waiting to be noticed.
