Schrattenbachův palác, Baroque palace in Brno, Czech Republic.
Schrattenbachův palác is a three-story Baroque building with ornate ceilings, formal halls, and classical architectural details throughout its rooms. The courtyard features a modern glass pyramid that contrasts with the historic stone structure surrounding it.
Marie Elisabeth Breuner commissioned its construction in 1703 on a site that previously held two medieval houses, replacing the older structures. Architect Christian Alexander Oedtl designed the palace in the Baroque style that would define the building for centuries.
The palace once held paintings, porcelain, and Eastern objects that reflected the taste of wealthy owners in the 1700s. Today visitors can sense how a prosperous family lived among such refined possessions in these elegant rooms.
The Jiri Mahen Library has occupied the palace since 1951 and welcomes visitors to explore its historic interior in central Brno. Access to the cultural resources and architectural details is available to the public during regular library hours.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed in the palace at age eleven during the winter of 1767 while traveling with his parents. The family had come to perform at the nearby Reduta Theatre during their tour.
