Knihovna Jiřího Mahena

Knihovna Jiřího Mahena is a public library in Brno housing hundreds of thousands of items in its central building and branches across the city. The main facility occupies a Baroque palace on Kobližná Street, creating a historic setting for borrowing and research.

The library was founded in 1921 as Brno's public reading institution. Its relocation to the Schrattenbach Palace in 1950 marked a significant moment, establishing its current home in this Baroque building.

The library honors its namesake, Jiří Mahen, Brno's founding librarian whose vision shaped the institution's direction. Visitors can explore the memorial space dedicated to his life and professional contributions to the city's cultural development.

The library provides comfortable spaces for study, reading, and research within the historic palace. Different sections are organized by material type, and visiting during daytime hours on weekdays offers the most comprehensive access to resources and staff assistance.

Since 2013, the library runs a special program lending toys and educational materials specifically for children with disabilities. The Readers' Tram project extends this service by bringing books to different neighborhoods across the city.
