Oppidum Stradonice

Oppidum Stradonice is a Celtic fortified settlement located on elevated terrain near the Berounka River in central Bohemia. The site contains remains of residential buildings, storage structures, workshops, and defensive earthworks that organized the community across multiple sections.

The settlement was inhabited during the Iron Age and early Celtic period, serving as a regional trading hub with connections throughout Celtic territories. It was likely abandoned in ancient times as trade networks shifted and political circumstances changed.

The settlement displays Celtic craftmanship through decorated pottery with red and white patterns that reveal local production techniques. These designs suggest a community with established artistic traditions and regular exchange with neighboring groups.

The site is accessible on foot with marked paths connecting different sections of the ancient settlement across the hillside. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit when weather is mild and archaeological features are more visible in the landscape.

The settlement was exceptionally rich in coins and metal objects, revealing it as a prosperous trading center that attracted merchants from distant regions. Coins from various Celtic areas were discovered during excavations, showing the wide reach of its commercial networks.
