Castle Nižbor

Castle Nižbor is a fortress in Central Bohemia that blends Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. The structure overlooks the Berounka River and displays a mix of medieval walls with later refined additions.

The fortress was founded in 1265 by King Ottokar II and served as a medieval stronghold. In 1425, Hussite forces captured it, which shifted regional power dynamics at that time.

The castle stands next to a crystal glass factory that has operated since the early 1900s. This arrangement shows how the building connects to local craft traditions that shaped the region's identity.

Visitors can book guided tours that include castle exploration and demonstrations at the nearby crystal glass factory. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the grounds are fully accessible.

Between 1720 and 1725, architect František Maxmilián Kaňka redesigned the structure, transforming it from a medieval fortress into a Baroque residential palace. This renovation gave the old stronghold refined classical details and a new purpose.
