Dřevíč Castle, Baroque castle in Sýkořice, Czech Republic
Dřevíč Castle is a baroque structure with a rectangular footprint and two stories topped by a mansard roof that displays the Fürstenberg coat of arms on its front facade. It sits within a forested landscape that forms part of the Křivoklátsko region in Central Bohemia.
The castle was built in the early 18th century by Prince Josef Wilhelm Fürstenberg as a replacement for an older hunting lodge from the 16th century. It changed hands when the state acquired it in 1929 and converted it to a different purpose.
The nearby Neo-Baroque chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert displays religious sculptures and artworks that reflect the spiritual life of the region during its baroque period. These artworks show the devotional practices that were important to the noble families who lived here.
The site sits in a heavily forested area with well-marked hiking trails crisscrossing the surrounding countryside. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and plan to spend time walking the paths that pass through this rural landscape.
After passing to state control, the building was repurposed as a headquarters for forest administration and operated as a training facility for workers. This practical transformation changed the building from a noble residence into a center for managing the surrounding woodlands.
