Šternberský palác

Šternberský palác is a baroque building with four wings arranged around a square courtyard, featuring a distinctive front with adjoining gardens. Inside, it functions as an art museum displaying paintings from several centuries of European art.

Count Václav Vojtěch of Šternberk commissioned the building between 1699 and 1708, replacing earlier Gothic and Renaissance structures on the site. It later became an important center for collecting European artworks.

The collection shows paintings from Italy, the Netherlands, and other countries between the 15th and 18th centuries. You can see how European artists of this period developed their approaches and styles.

The building is open to visitors with paid admission, so it helps to check current hours and ticket information beforehand. The location is in the historic center and easily accessible by public transport.

In the courtyard stands a monumental bronze statue of a lion overpowering a snake, created by French artist Antoin-Louis Barye. This sculpture is among the most notable works of 19th-century sculptural art.
