Ústí nad Labem Zoo, Zoological gardens in Krásné Březno, Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic
Ústí nad Labem Zoo is a facility housing around 1,500 animals from approximately 240 different species, including orangutans, rhinoceroses, and Malayan sun bears in spacious outdoor enclosures. The roughly 26-hectare site is spread across two levels and displays animals in naturalistic settings.
The site began in 1908 when a metal goods businessman named Heinrich Lumpe established a private bird park called Lumpepark. The original bird collection eventually developed into a public zoo housing many different animal species.
The zoo plays an active role in protecting endangered species through breeding programs and rescue initiatives for animals at risk. Visitors can see this conservation work reflected in how the animals are housed and cared for throughout the grounds.
The grounds are spread across two different elevations, which can make exploring all areas on foot somewhat tiring. A train service connects the lower and upper zones and makes it easier to move between the areas.
The grounds feature a dedicated children's play area with animal figures, slides, and a petting section where young visitors can interact directly with gentler animals. A separate dinosaur trail displays prehistoric creature models in naturalistic surroundings.
