Ústí nad Labem Zoo, Zoological gardens in Krásné Březno, Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic
Ústí nad Labem Zoo is a public zoo in the city of Ústí nad Labem, in the Czech Republic, with hundreds of animal species housed in outdoor enclosures. The grounds are laid out across two levels, with animals including orangutans, rhinoceroses, and Malayan sun bears kept in settings that follow their natural environments.
The site dates to 1908, when a metal goods businessman named Heinrich Lumpe created a private bird park there, known as Lumpepark. Over time, that original bird collection grew into the public zoo that stands on the site today.
The zoo runs breeding programs for threatened species, and visitors can see animals like orangutans and Malayan sun bears in enclosures designed to reflect their natural habitat. The way the animals are housed gives a clear sense of how the zoo approaches animal care.
The zoo sits across two levels, so moving from one part to the other on foot takes some effort, especially for those with limited mobility. A small train runs between the lower and upper sections, which makes getting around much easier for all visitors.
The grounds include a dinosaur trail where models of prehistoric creatures are placed in a natural setting, which sets this zoo apart from a typical visit. There is also a petting section where younger visitors can get close to gentler animals, separate from the main animal enclosures.
