Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Social sciences faculty in Holešovice district, Prague, Czech Republic
The Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University is an academic institution in the Holešovice district of Prague, organised around five institutes. These cover economics, journalism, political science, sociology, and international relations.
The faculty was founded in 1990, shortly after the end of communism in Czechoslovakia, as part of a broad renewal of academic life. Its creation reflected the political and social changes that the country was going through at the time.
Students from many different countries study here side by side, which makes everyday campus life feel open and international. English is often heard alongside Czech in the hallways and common areas.
The main building is in Holešovice and is easy to reach by public transport. Visitors can ask at the reception desk near the entrance for directions to the different institutes on campus.
The libraries of the individual institutes hold research collections that are open to external researchers, not only students. Some of these holdings on post-1989 Eastern European social sciences are hard to find anywhere else.
