The Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University is based in the classicist Hollar building on Smetanovo nábřeží in Prague 1, with further premises in Opletalova Street and the Jinonice campus. It is divided into five institutes covering economics, journalism and media studies, international studies, political studies and sociological studies.

The faculty was founded in 1990, shortly after the end of communism in Czechoslovakia, as part of a broad renewal of academic life. Its creation reflected the political and social changes that the country was going through at the time.

Students from many different countries study here side by side, which makes everyday campus life feel open and international. English is often heard alongside Czech in the hallways and common areas.

The faculty occupies three sites: the classicist Hollar palace on Smetanovo nábřeží in Prague 1, the building at Opletalova 26, and the Jinonice campus with its new multifunctional library. The Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism sits in Hollar, while the Institute of Economic Studies is based in Opletalova.

The libraries of the individual institutes hold research collections that are open to external researchers, not only students. Some of these holdings on post-1989 Eastern European social sciences are hard to find anywhere else.
