Labyrinth under Vegetable Market, Brno, Medieval underground passages in Brno, Czech Republic
The Labyrinth under the Vegetable Market is an extensive network of cellars and passages stretching nearly one kilometer beneath the square. These rooms lie about 26 feet (8 meters) deep and interconnect various areas that once served storage and protection for goods.
Merchants built these passages in medieval times to store food, wine, and beer in cool conditions, which became essential for a growing city. This underground storage system was crucial to Brno's development as a trading hub.
The passages reveal how medieval merchants organized their business and daily work beneath the busy market square above. Walking through these cellars shows how storage and commerce were central to the city's life centuries ago.
Access involves descending about 212 steps into the underground passages, which is manageable for most visitors. Weekday visits tend to be less crowded, allowing you to explore the spaces more comfortably at your own pace.
Among the displays are replicas of medieval punishment equipment that reveal how justice was administered publicly in the medieval city. These objects serve as a stark reminder that the market square above was not only a place of commerce but also of public discipline.
