Sweerts-Sporckův palác, Baroque palace complex in New Town, Czech Republic
Sweerts-Sporck Palace is a baroque palace complex in New Town, Prague featuring elaborately decorated facades. The building displays three stories with ornate stonework, multiple rows of tall windows, ornamental railings along the roofline, and two grand stone entrances with Ionic columns framing mythological sculptures.
The property underwent major transformation starting in 1694 when Count Karel Joachim of Breda acquired a deteriorating site and developed it into a baroque residence. Its subsequent use as a performance venue shaped its importance as a cultural center during the 18th century.
The palace served as a performance venue for Italian opera ensembles during the 18th century. These musical events made it a gathering place for Prague's high society and art enthusiasts.
The palace is located on Hybernska Street in Prague 1 district with convenient access via public transportation. Its position in the city center makes it easy to visit alongside other historical landmarks in the neighborhood.
A modern section was added to the baroque structure in 1923 by architect Josef Gocar. This addition creates an unexpected fusion where two distinct architectural periods exist within the same building.
