Botanic garden and arboretum in Štramberk

The Botanic Garden and Arboretum in Štramberk occupies a former limestone quarry spanning roughly 10 hectares. The site features varied plant collections, distinctive rock outcrops, water pools, and sits at the base of Bílá hora mountain.

The site functioned as a limestone quarry starting in 1860, then transitioned to a municipal waste site after the quarry closed in the 1920s. A biologist launched the transformation into a botanical garden in 1996.

The garden features a stone labyrinth and a chapel dedicated to John the Baptist, which blend natural spaces with local spiritual traditions. These elements show how the site connects people with nature and regional beliefs.

The garden is accessible by a path from the village of Štramberk, with parking available nearby. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and becomes slippery when wet.

In the limestone wetland at the garden's base, visitors can discover fossils including shark teeth and mollusk shells from ancient times. These remnants reveal the site's prehistoric marine history and add a geological dimension to the visit.
