U Strejčkova lomu, Natural monument in Krčmaň, Czech Republic.
U Strejčkova lomu is a protected natural monument in Krčmaň that occupies the site of a former limestone quarry now covered with grassland and steep slopes. The terrain spans elevations from 210 to 234 meters and supports a diversity of plant life adapted to its specific soil conditions.
Protection came in 1952 after conservationists had begun documenting and preserving the area in the 1940s. These early preservation efforts established the foundation for the ongoing management and safeguarding of the site today.
This site reflects how humans have shaped the land and then worked to protect it. The grasslands and slopes are carefully maintained today to preserve the rare plants that have established themselves over many decades.
Access is available but paths can be uneven, so wear sturdy footwear. The best time to visit is during the growing season when flowering plants are visible and conditions are easiest for exploration.
The site harbors one of the region's largest populations of a rare flowering plant found nowhere else in the surrounding landscape. This plant community emerged from an unintended benefit that past quarrying activity created for botanical diversity.
