Velešov Castle, Gothic castle ruin in Potštejn, Czech Republic.
Velešov Castle is a Gothic ruin located near Potshtejn, standing at elevation on a hillside with visible stone walls and foundations. The remains include fortified gateways, defensive structures, and traces of buildings such as a chapel that once stood within the walls.
The castle was built in the 14th century and was captured by Emperor Charles IV in 1339, the only recorded conquest in its documented history. After this event, it remained under the control of different noble families for several centuries.
The castle served multiple generations of noble families who left their mark on its layout and construction over centuries. Today you can observe how rooms were organized and what roles different spaces played in daily life.
The site is accessible during the warmer months from April through October with parking available and marked pathways throughout the ruins. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and some areas are steep or rocky.
Count Harbuval de Chamaré spent decades excavating the grounds in search of hidden treasure, a quest that ultimately proved fruitless. This colorful episode later inspired writer Alois Jirasek to create a fictional account of the search.
