Čertovo břemeno, Crag and tail geological formation in Jistebnice, Czech Republic

Čertovo břemeno is a granite rock outcrop in the Jistebnice Highlands, in the Cunkov cadastral area between the villages of Cunkov and Ounuz, about 1 km southeast of Javorová skála. Its shapes were formed by long-term erosion, and a small hollow on top is linked to a devil legend.

The crag is a surface outcrop of durbachite, a dark-mineral-rich syenite to granite type named after this site and found across the southern Sedlčany area. Its rock shapes were formed by long-term erosion, not by glacial action.

Local folklore named this formation Čertovo břemeno, meaning Devil's Burden, reflecting centuries of tales passed through generations in the South Bohemian region.

Visitors can access the site through marked hiking trails, with parking facilities available at the nearby Hotel Golf Čertovo břemeno entrance.

The hollow on top of the rock outcrop is explained in local legend as the imprint of the devil's hoof, left when he stopped to rest under his heavy load. A second version says he threw the boulder down near Cunkov in anger after finding the church at Nadějkov already consecrated.
