Devět křížů, Memorial site near Lesní Hluboké, Czech Republic
Devět křížů is a memorial site near Lesní Hluboké in the Czech Republic, consisting of nine wooden crosses. The crosses stand in a row along an old route that once served as the main connection between two major cities, rising among pine trees and low brush.
Monks from a nearby monastery are said to have erected the first crosses at this spot in the 16th century. The earliest written mention dates from the late 18th century, though the present wooden structures have been regularly replaced.
The name refers to an unverified event in 1540, when nine people supposedly died in a violent incident on the route between two cities. Today the site remains a place of remembrance where travelers pause to reflect and observe the wooden crosses among the trees.
The site lies near exit 168 of the D1 motorway, making it easy for travelers to reach. A hotel and rest area are nearby if you want to take a break during your journey.
Archaeological excavations in 2012 found no human remains at the spot, despite centuries of oral tradition speaking of a mass grave. Scientists from a local university conducted the dig to verify the legend.
