Hornický skanzen Mayrau, Mining heritage museum in Vinařice, Czech Republic
Hornický skanzen Mayrau is a mining open-air museum containing original equipment, machinery, and mine structures in their unchanged state from the last working day. The site shows the technical setup and physical layout of an active coal extraction operation.
The Mayrau mine was founded in 1874 and operated a deep shaft for around 120 years. The operation closed in 1997, marking the end of coal extraction at this major regional mining site.
Former coal miners work as guides here, sharing what it was like to work underground every day. Their personal stories bring the mining experience to life in ways you cannot find in books.
You can visit year-round though hours vary by season, with parking available on site. Bring proper footwear for uneven ground and allow time to explore the expansive outdoor site at a comfortable pace.
The site preserves three hoisting machines from different eras, including models built in 1905 and 1932. These devices show how mining technology evolved over several decades of operation.
