Hornický skanzen Mayrau, Mining heritage museum in Vinařice, Czech Republic
Hornický skanzen Mayrau is a coal mining open-air museum in Vinařice, in the Czech Republic, where the original pit structures, machines, and equipment have been kept in place. The surface buildings and shafts remain as they were on the last day of operation, giving a full picture of how the site functioned.
The Mayrau mine was founded in 1874 and ran a deep shaft for over a century, extracting coal from the Central Bohemian basin. It closed in 1997, ending a long chapter in the region's mining history.
Former miners serve as guides on site, sharing stories from their working years underground. Walking alongside them gives a sense of what daily life in a coal mine actually felt like.
The site is open throughout the year, though visiting hours change with the season, so it is worth checking ahead. Wear sturdy shoes, as the outdoor grounds are uneven and take time to walk through properly.
The site holds three hoisting machines from different decades, including models built in 1905 and 1932, all still in place. Seeing them side by side shows how the technology changed over the life of the mine without leaving the grounds.
