Horní Bečva Reservoir, reservoir in Horní Bečva, Czech Republic
Horní Bečva Reservoir is a water storage structure in the village of Horní Bečva, built on the Rožnovská Bečva river and surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The dam, made of earth and clay, stretches about 250 meters long and rises nearly 14 meters high, holding water across an area of just under 8 hectares.
Construction of the dam began in 1933 and was completed around 1947 to protect the area from severe flooding that had caused damage in earlier decades. The project also helped maintain river flow during dry periods, becoming an essential infrastructure for the surrounding region.
Visitors can arrive by car with parking nearby or take the bus, making access convenient for different travelers. The area offers walking trails, cycling paths, swimming areas, and opportunities for fishing, boating, and picnicking, with local restaurants and accommodations close by.
The reservoir features a small hydroelectric plant producing only 17 kilowatts of power, enough to serve local facilities. In winter months, parts of the water freeze over, allowing visitors to ice skate and sled, creating seasonal activities that few expect at this quiet location.
