Fata Morgana Greenhouse, Greenhouse in Troja, Prague, Czech Republic

The Fata Morgana Greenhouse is a modern facility in Prague-Troja that holds three separate climate zones filled with plants from tropical regions around the world. The structure features multiple sections where humidity and warmth are carefully controlled to recreate habitats from different parts of the globe.

The greenhouse was built between 1996 and 2003. Costs originally estimated at 20 million crowns rose above 200 million, and in 2001 the botanical garden was fined half a million crowns for building without a permit. Annual operating costs in 2003 were ten million crowns.

The name comes from the Fata Morgana mirage, fitting a collection that gathers flora from Madagascar, South America, Africa, Vietnam and the Sunda Islands. The plantings follow phytogeographic regions, and many specimens were collected on the garden's own expeditions.

The pathways lead through different sections designed with special lighting and water features to make the walk comfortable. Visitors should allow time to adjust as they move through the varying climate zones.

Inside, real tropical sounds of rain and thunder play throughout, deepening the illusion of visiting a distant place. These audio effects change within each climate zone, making every corner feel immersive.
