Kuřim Prison, Gefängnis in Tschechien
Kuřim Prison is a correctional facility located in the town of Kuřim in South Moravia, roughly 30 kilometers north of Brno. The facility was rebuilt in its current form during the late 1970s and houses more than 400 male inmates serving sentences in functional buildings surrounded by high fences and watchtowers.
The prison was originally established in the mid-1950s as a branch facility of another institution. Its current form took shape between 1975 and 1981, when extensive modernization and expansion fundamentally changed the appearance and functionality of the complex.
Visits are possible on weekdays during specific hours but require advance notification and identification. Visitors should familiarize themselves with rules about personal items, as many things are restricted, and should understand that the environment is strictly structured and regulated.
The facility has housed the country's only specialized unit for inmates convicted of sexual offenses since 1997. This unit is run by specialists and works with outside experts to provide treatment and rehabilitation, keeping the recidivism rate exceptionally low.
