Klášter Dolní Ročov, Augustinian monastery in Dolní Ročov, Czech Republic.
Klášter Dolní Ročov is an Augustinian monastery featuring baroque architecture with a longitudinal nave, transverse aisles, wide alcoves, and a central dome over the square presbytery. The structure was further enhanced by two distinctive towers added between 1735 and 1755, giving the complex its characteristic appearance.
Founded in 1373 by Albrecht z Kolovrat, the monastery later suffered significant damage during the Hussite Wars and Saxon attacks in 1631. The baroque transformation with the new towers followed about a century later, marking an architectural reorientation of the complex.
The monastery holds a late medieval sandstone Madonna figure and the Ročov Gradual manuscript featuring Czech chorale notation. These religious objects reflect the site's connection to local faith traditions and medieval cultural life in the region.
The site is currently undergoing renovation and serves as a humanitarian aid warehouse. Visitors should check ahead about access availability and be prepared for construction work and restricted areas.
Baroque architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer was responsible for the two distinctive towers that give the monastery an unparalleled appearance in the region. These towers represent a rare architectural intervention that radically transformed the original building.
