Church of Saint Anthony the Great, church in Hradec Králové District of Hradec Králové region
The Church of Saint Anthony the Great is a baroque structure in Nový Hradec Králové located on a main square of the city. It features a cross-shaped layout with a curved main facade, tall arched windows, and a corner tower topped with a bulbous cupola that dominates the skyline.
The predecessor was a Gothic chapel on Slezské przedmestí that was destroyed following the Thirty Years War. When the city was fortified in the mid-1700s, a larger new baroque structure was constructed starting in 1769 and completed by 1774 in a different location.
The church is named after Saint Anthony the Hermit, a figure venerated in Christian tradition. Its construction reflects how displaced residents from an older neighborhood created a new spiritual center while preserving ties to their past through materials salvaged from earlier places of worship.
The church sits on a busy central square and is easily accessible, with wide steps at the main entrance suited for visitors of all ages. Nearby shops and restaurants in the surrounding area make it a convenient stop while exploring the historic center.
The structure was built using stone and fixtures from the destroyed predecessor church, creating a physical link between the old and new city. This material reuse was both practical and a way to preserve the history of displaced residents.
