Castle ruin of Kynžvart

Castle ruin of Kynžvart is the stone remains of a medieval fortress located above the spa town, featuring preserved outer walls, a standing tower, and remnants of former palace structures. The site occupies a hilltop position and can be accessed on foot through marked paths in the surrounding forest.

The stronghold was built in the 13th century to guard the border and saw multiple shifts in control over subsequent centuries. During the 17th century, military campaigns caused significant damage that led to its eventual abandonment.

The ruins tell the story of medieval settlement in this border region, and visitors can read about the legends and regional tales connected to the site. Information boards placed throughout the grounds explain how communities once defended their territories in this part of Bohemia.

The easiest way to reach the ruins is by hiking on marked trails that start near the spa town, with several access points available from the main area. Parking is available close to the town center and cemetery, making it simple to find your starting point.

A surprising detail is that building materials from these medieval remains were later recycled to construct the neoclassical residence built by the Metternich family. This means the original fortress literally became part of the grander structure that replaced it in the valley below.
