Křižovnický ostrov, River island under Charles Bridge, Old Town, Czech Republic
Križovnicky ostrov is a small island nestled beneath Charles Bridge in the Old Town, extending along the right bank of the Vltava River. The Knights of the Cross monastery building occupies most of the space and defines the island's appearance with its solid stone structure.
The island contains a well-preserved pillar from the 12th-century Judith Bridge, which predated Charles Bridge and was integrated into the monastery building's structure. This pillar stands as a direct remnant from an earlier era of Prague.
The island takes its name from the Knights of the Cross order, who established their monastery here and whose church still defines the area today. Visitors can observe the old religious architecture and sense how this place has served as a spiritual center for centuries.
Several arched bridges link the southern part to the riverbank, providing easy access for visitors exploring the area. A hidden dock within the monastery tunnels is used by boat tours if you wish to approach from the water.
A stone carving known as Bradac depicts a sculpted head that functioned as a water level indicator for centuries. This practical yet artistic detail served local people as an essential tool in their daily river activities.
