St. Nicholas Church, Baroque church in Vršovice, Czech Republic
St. Nicholas Church is a single-nave baroque church with a three-sided presbytery and a tower at the northwest corner of Vršovické náměstí. The tower is topped by an octagonal onion dome with a lantern and finial, rising just under 28 metres. The nave was extended by 8 metres in 1896 and given a neo-gothic facade.
An earlier gothic building occupied this site from at least the early 15th century. The current baroque structure was built in the early 18th century and replaced the older building.
The church is named after Saint Nicholas, and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the north wall with an inscription stating that the town is dedicated to this saint. The 19th-century organ and confessionals remain in place.
The church stands in the northwest corner of Vršovické náměstí on Moskevská street, its tower rising from the presbytery. The west face of the tower clock shows the moon phases and Venus as the evening star. The building opened to the public in September 2012 during European Heritage Days.
A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk on the north wall commemorates a priest who refused to reveal confessional secrets. This monument represents an important figure in local religious tradition.
