Palác Myslbek, Modern commercial building in Old Town, Czech Republic
Palác Myslbek is a modern commercial building with a glass facade that connects Prague's Old Town and New Town through a central arcade. The structure spans between Na Příkopě and Ovocný trh streets and contains about twenty shops, restaurants, and office spaces across multiple floors.
The building was built in 1996 on a site where the Myslbek Artists Association pavilion stood during the 1930s and 1940s. Its construction marked a significant transformation of this historic corner between Prague's two historic districts.
The ground floor displays Europe's largest glass art installation, a crystal vortex design by artist Maxim Velčovský. You can see this glass sculpture as you walk through the central shopping and dining area.
The building is easily reached by public transportation and features multiple elevators for access to various floors. The central arcade is open to foot traffic during shopping hours and provides a direct connection between the two streets.
An eight-ton stainless steel gate at Na Příkopě street opens and closes over about six minutes. This impressive gate marks the symbolic boundary between Prague's Old Town and New Town and serves as a functional work of art.
