Nový Svět, Medieval stone street in Hradčany district, Prague, Czech Republic.
Nový Svět is a narrow cobblestone lane in Prague that winds between small, colorful houses with painted doors bearing names like Golden Griffin and White Lion. The houses feature traditional architectural details and decorative elements that reflect their medieval origins.
This lane began in the 14th century as a settlement for workers and craftspeople who served the castle above. After a major fire in the 1700s destroyed much of it, the street was rebuilt and took on the form we see today.
Today, artists and writers live here and keep the medieval feeling alive through their choice of how they maintain the buildings and decorate their spaces.
You can get there by taking tram 22 to Pohořelec stop or walking uphill from Malostranská metro station. The climb is steady but the cobblestones are solid underfoot and easy to walk on.
Several houses display Prussian cannonballs embedded in their walls, remaining from military conflicts during the 18th century. These metal spheres serve as physical reminders of the street's turbulent past.
