Pavlovské mokřady, Nature reserve near Pavlov settlement in Benešov, Czech Republic.
Pavlovské mokřady is a nature reserve near Benešov covering about 124 hectares of transitional and raised peatland with distinct wetland habitats. The landscape includes wet meadows, drainage ditches, and open water areas that support diverse ecosystems typical of the Drahanská Highlands.
The area was designated as a protected area in 1988, after earlier drainage work had already modified the landscape in 1941. Botanical surveys started in 1946 and revealed the scientific importance of the wetland ecosystem.
The reserve takes its name from the nearby Pavlov settlement and today attracts birdwatchers and nature researchers interested in wetland conservation. Visitors experience how these habitats support species that cannot survive elsewhere in the region.
The terrain is boggy and marshy, so waterproof footwear is essential for exploring the site comfortably. Spring and summer offer the best conditions for birdwatching and observing flowering plants throughout the reserve.
The wetland hosts unusual plant species like early marsh orchids, globeflowers, and Siberian iris varieties that thrive only in specific conditions. Mountain newts and common vipers also inhabit this reserve, creatures rarely encountered together in such wetland settings.
