Statue of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Prague

This bronze monument on Hradčanské Square depicts the first president of Czechoslovakia in an upright pose on a circular granite base. The work stands near Prague Castle and overlooks one of the city's oldest plazas with its surrounding historic buildings.

Sculptor Otakar Španiel created the original work in 1931, which later served as the model for this public monument. The installation took place in 2000 to commemorate the founding figure's birth 150 years prior.

The statue reflects how Czechs honor their first president as the founder of their democracy. Visitors naturally gather here, making it a place where history and everyday life intersect.

The monument sits on one of the main plazas on a hilltop, making it easily accessible on foot when climbing toward the castle. You can combine a visit here with a walk through the historic old town or around the castle grounds themselves.

An identical bronze copy of this statue was transported to Mexico and installed on a street bearing the president's name. This international version shows how his memory extended far beyond Czechoslovak borders.
