Obora Fláje, Game reserve in Český Jiřetín, Czech Republic
Obora Fláje is a game reserve covering around 1,930 hectares on a plateau in the Krushne Mountains at roughly 950 meters elevation. The property includes historic structures and open landscapes where different wildlife species live and move across the terrain.
The reserve was founded in 1848 and was designed to maintain herds of different deer species, initially local and later supplemented with animals brought from North America. Over the 19th century it became an established wildlife management area in the region.
The hunting lodge from the 1770s reflects the region's deep traditions of managing wildlife in the mountains. Visitors can encounter this historical building and understand how local communities have shaped the landscape over generations.
Access is limited to designated Open Gate Days when the public can visit on marked trails by foot or bicycle. Plan ahead by checking when these visiting days occur, as the reserve is otherwise closed to visitors.
The reserve is known for breeding capercaillie, a rare forest grouse found in European mountain regions. Patient visitors who walk the open areas may spot black storks, owls, and occasionally golden eagles moving across the landscape.
