Rozštípená skála

Rozštípená skála is a natural rock formation featuring a deep crack running through gneiss bedrock near Žďár nad Sázavou. The split extends significantly through the stone and creates a distinctive geological feature within the surrounding landscape.

The site received official protection status in 1974 as a natural monument in the Vysočina region. This designation recognized the formation as geologically significant and worthy of long-term preservation.

A concrete mammoth head sculpture emerges from the ground near the split rock, created by a local artist to connect the site with ice age imagery and regional artistic traditions. This artwork transforms the natural monument into a space where geology meets human creativity.

The site can be reached via marked hiking trails from Žďár nad Sázavou or from the nearby Ceska Mez settlement. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and some sections involve climbing over rocks.

The rock formation offers over 120 climbing routes of varying difficulty, making it a popular destination for climbers from across the region. The surrounding area also serves as a habitat for bats, owls, and vipers that thrive among the stone crevices.
