Kadaň Reservoir, reservoir in Kadaň, Czech Republic

The Kadaň Reservoir is a water storage structure on the Ohře River in the town of Kadaň in the Czech Republic, built starting in the 1960s. Open water stretches across a wide space surrounded by gentle land and fields, with the straightforward dam design visible from many points in the area.

Built between 1966 and 1971 and in operation since 1972, the reservoir replaced water lost when the nearby Nechranice reservoir was reduced by two million cubic metres after the Čachovický lalok lobe was buried by spoil from a neighbouring lignite mine. It was constructed by the firm Vodní stavby to supply the Tušimice and Prunéřov power plants.

A cycle path runs across the dam and along the right bank between Kadaň and Klášterec nad Ohří, and the reservoir is also used for recreation. On the left bank, directly above the dam, stands the Franciscan Monastery of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a national cultural monument.

The reservoir was built by the state enterprise Vodní stavby as a replacement water source after the nearby Nechranice reservoir lost two million cubic metres of capacity, because the so-called Čachovice lobe was buried by the spoil heap of a neighbouring lignite mine.
