U Němých, Cold War military bunker in Těně, Czech Republic
U Němých is an underground military facility in the Brdy mountain range with multiple levels connected by armored gas-tight doors. The installation contains command rooms, offices, conference spaces, and technical areas that were designed to operate during nuclear conflict.
Construction took place between 1955 and 1958 as an anti-atomic command post for the Czechoslovak 7th Army under code name S1. The facility was a key component of Warsaw Pact defensive systems during the Cold War era.
Local residents refer to the personnel working at the facility as 'The Silent Ones' due to their strict adherence to confidentiality protocols.
The bunker is located in a forested mountain area that can be accessed on foot and offers good conditions for exploration. Visitors should bring warm clothing since the underground spaces remain cool year-round.
Unlike similar installations across the region that were abandoned after the Cold War, this bunker still operates. The preservation of the site offers rare insight into the operational structure of Warsaw Pact defensive installations.
