Libuše and Přemysl, Bronze sculpture in Vyšehrad, Czech Republic.
This bronze sculpture displays two standing figures representing Libuše and Přemysl, cast by Josef Václav Myslbek in 1897. The work sits in Vyšehradské sady park within the ancient Vyšehrad fortress complex in Prague.
The work was originally created around 1900 for Palacký Bridge, where it suffered damage during an air raid in February 1945. Following this damage, the sculpture was moved to Vyšehrad, where it has remained.
The figures show Libuše and Přemysl, whose union according to Czech legend led to the founding of the Přemyslid dynasty. Visitors encounter two characters representing these legendary rulers and the bond between them.
The monument sits in the public park Vyšehradské sady, which is integrated into the old Vyšehrad fortress grounds and accessible on foot. The park is free to enter and offers paths through the historic grounds with several other artworks.
The sculpture is part of a series of four mythological pairs that Myslbek specifically designed for Palacký Bridge. This larger collection displays different scenes from Czech legends and historical depictions.
