Karmeliten-Barfüßerkloster der Siegreichen Jungfrau, Prag, Carmelite monastery in Malá Strana, Czech Republic
The Barefoot Carmelite Monastery stands on Karmelitská Street in Malá Strana, beside the Church of Our Lady Victorious and St. Anthony of Padua. The Carmelites arrived in 1624 and built a large complex on the church's south side, now the seat of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The church interior holds a separate Baroque altar for the Infant Jesus of Prague.
Barefoot Carmelites came to the existing monastery by the Church of Our Lady Victorious in 1624 and built a large complex on the church's south side, now the seat of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. In 1628 Polyxena of Lobkowicz, born Pernštejn, gave the community the Infant Jesus of Prague statue she had received as a wedding gift from her mother, Marie Manrique de Lara y Mendoza. Emperor Joseph II's church reforms abolished the monastery in 1784; the Carmelites returned in 1993.
The statuette of the Infant Jesus of Prague is the sanctuary's focal point and receives different vestments according to the liturgical calendar, drawing pilgrims who venerate it throughout the year. This practice shows how the Christ child holds a central place in the prayer life of visitors and the community.
The monastery stands on Karmelitská Street in the lower part of Seminářská Garden in Malá Strana, Prague 1, next to the Church of Our Lady Victorious and St. Anthony of Padua. The church is the part open to visitors; the adjoining convent complex now houses the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and is not open as a sight.
The monastery's church is known as Our Lady Victorious and St. Anthony of Padua, but the statue inside gave it a second name: Pražské Jezulátko, the Infant Jesus of Prague. Polyxena of Lobkowicz, born Pernštejn, gave the figure to the monastery in 1628; she had received it as a wedding gift from her mother, María Manrique de Lara y Mendoza.
