Velké Žernoseky, Schloss in Tschechien
Velké Žernoseky is a castle in the village of Velké Žernoseky, originally built as a fortress in the 16th century and later remodeled in baroque style. The structure features a cross-shaped floor plan with a two-story central section, steep roof, and family crests displayed above the main entrance.
The site was first documented in the mid-1000s, though the fortress itself was built in the 1500s and destroyed during the 1600s wars. Jan Hartvík from the Nostitz family purchased the ruins in 1667 and reconstructed the building in baroque style during the following decades.
The castle has been linked to winemaking traditions for centuries, a connection that continues today through an active winery on the grounds. Visitors can observe how this heritage shapes daily life and local identity in the village.
The castle is located in a quiet village near Litoměřice in the Ústí region. You can walk through the grounds and explore the wine cellars carved into the rock, which have existed since the 1200s.
The wine cellars were carved from rock starting in the 1200s and form an underground network still used for wine storage today. These stone chambers represent a rare feature, as few buildings in the region have such an extensive subterranean system.
