The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave Baroque building in Štípa, forming an architectural ensemble with the adjoining monastery. The Štípa Madonna statue stands in a glazed case on the main altar, flanked by statues of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Francis of Assisi and Norbert. In the apse behind the altar are statues of Saints Joseph, Anne, Joachim and Elizabeth, and the vault is painted with scenes from the Virgin's life.

Albrecht von Wallenstein founded the monastery and new church in the 17th century to fulfil the wish of his first wife, Lukrécie Nekšovna z Landeka, who died in 1614. The foundation charter is dated 1617, and he donated 30,000 gold coins, the Štípa estate, two mills, and rights to timber, stone and fishing. Italian artists began the church in 1615, but the Thirty Years' War slowed work until the Seilern family bought Lukov after 1724 and hired builder Ignác Josef Cyrani. The church was consecrated in 1765 before 35,000 pilgrims.

The name recalls the finding of the Štípa statue of the Virgin Mary in the surrounding forests, venerated since the 14th century. The main pilgrimage is held on the weekend closest to 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The side aisle holds a statue of St Bruno, founder of the Carthusians, the church's first administrators.

The interior is open daily from May to September under the Otevřené brány (Open Gates) project. Regular services are held four times a week, so time your visit outside them. The main pilgrimage falls on the weekend nearest 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, when crowds are largest.

The church was built in 1615–1620 by Italian artists summoned by Albrecht von Wallenstein, one year after the death of his first wife Lukrécie Nekšovna z Landeka. The adjacent monastery was granted to the Carthusians by founding charter in May 1617; a statue of St. Bruno, their founder, stands on the right side of the nave.
