Kounice

Kounice is a castle featuring a Renaissance core with a Baroque exterior located in the Czech Republic. The building has a rectangular layout with structural elements from multiple construction phases that reflect different architectural influences.

The fortress was built before 1554 and later transformed into a Baroque structure. In 1772 the castle came under the ownership of the House of Liechtenstein, where it remained through the centuries.

The castle stands as a protected cultural monument, with its architecture reflecting the artistic choices of different centuries. The layered design visible on its exterior tells the story of how building styles changed over time.

The castle is currently closed to visitors due to structural damage and ongoing deterioration from a 1990 fire. Before making a trip, check whether repairs have been completed or if at least viewing the exterior is possible.

The castle preserves Renaissance elements beneath its Baroque exterior from its original construction phase. These hidden older structures show how builders reshaped the building without tearing it down completely.
